From enemas to prostate massage: a unique experience

Preface

A straight friend of mine once shared his experience of prostate massage.

He felt pain and itchiness in his anus due to hemorrhoid flare-ups, and accidentally stuck his fingers into his anus while taking a shower.

What is an enema?

An enema is a method of cleansing the intestines by injecting liquid through the anus.

Early on, it was used to supplement the nutrition of weak patients who were unable to eat, and it was popular in Europe to use liquids such as milk, wine and even whiskey.

17th century European aristocrats even regarded enemas as a daily health care routine, and Louis XIV took about 2,000 enemas in his lifetime, and his court was even equipped with special metal enemas.

Today, hospitals use enemas mainly for the treatment of constipation and intestinal cleansing, and no longer as in the past for nutritional supplements or as a routine therapy.

Four ways to play an enema

Retention enema

This method involves retaining the enema solution for a certain period of time (usually an hour or more) after it has been injected into the intestines to allow for full absorption, and is usually used to treat intestinal disorders in order to allow the medicine to work.

Small unretained enema

This method mainly involves injecting a smaller amount of liquid, which is retained in a small portion of the intestinal tract.

The main function is to soften the feces, relieve constipation and expel stagnant gas.

This method is suitable for the preparation before abdominal or pelvic surgery, as well as for some weak patients, the elderly, pregnant women and so on.

Bulk Unreserved Enema

Different from the small amount of non-retention, this method injects a larger amount of liquid, but only a small portion is retained in the intestine.

It is mainly used to relieve constipation, to lower the temperature, and to prepare for certain surgeries, examinations, or childbirth.

Large enemas dilute harmful substances in the intestines and help reduce symptoms of poisoning.

Clean enema

This is the most common type of enema and is mainly used to completely remove feces from the colon.

Cleansing enemas are very commonly used to prepare for rectal and colonic exams and surgeries.

For people who do their own enemas at home, this method is more popular as it provides a feeling of a smooth flow after evacuation.

While the first three methods above are more often used for medical purposes, when it comes to at-home enemas, people usually opt for the fourth cleansing enema method for bowel cleansing and discomfort relief.

Enemas without having to buy tools

In the clinic, enemas are usually administered through an enema tube.

But at home, we can use a shower hose instead.

• First, you need to evenly apply lubricant around the anus.
• Next, turn on the faucet and control the water temperature around 37°C and the strength of the water flow, making sure that the water flow is not too strong.
• Then, place the hose on the outside of the anus and use the impact of the water flow to administer the enema, without inserting the hose directly into the anus, as that would increase the pain.
• Wait 5-10 minutes after the injection of water to defecate, repeated until the discharge of clear water

 Warm tips

• During the operation, you may feel bloating and slight gurgling in the abdomen, which is normal.
• If symptoms such as profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat, abdominal pain or panic occur during operation, stop immediately and find a place to sit down and rest for a while to ensure safety.
• A professional enema bag or syringe can be used to assist in the operation, and the amount of water in a single session is recommended to be no more than 500ml.

 Advantages and disadvantages of enemas

 Advantages: cleanses the intestinal tract, reduces the risk of infection, and some people feedback that it can relieve bloating.

Disadvantages: long-term operation may destroy the balance of intestinal flora, there is a risk of mucosal damage, frequent use can lead to dependence.

The ultimate goal of enema
